چکیده

This paper explores achieving “application/network adaptation” in wide-area networks supporting mobile users through the use of an active network technology. Network flexibility is achieved through the introduction of SmartPackets which carry address information, user data, and user-specified methods that act on the SmartPacket as it traverses the network. Thus, SmartPackets allow the application to customize the network and adapt the network to the application’s immediate requirements. Applications respond to a dynamic network environment as well as tailor the network to its needs through these techniques. We argue that such an architecture is viable and extremely important in supporting mobile hosts.

A New Reliable Controller Placement Model for Software-Defined WANs

Software-Defined Network (SDNs) is a decoupled architecture that enables administrators to build a customizable and manageable network. Although the decoupled control plane provides flexible management and facilitates the task of operating the network, it is the vulnerable point of failure in SDN. To achieve a reliable control plane, multiple controller are often needed so that each switch must...

Call Management using Software Agents

In this paper, an agent-based platform to control and to manage the interaction between customer and different ATM service provider networks is addressed. The aim of the presented approach is to offer an ATM end-user Quality of Service (QoS) and costs information, enabling him to establish a proper routing policy when multiple switched-based ATM WANs are present. The system architecture describ...

ATLAS I: A Single-chip ATM switch for NOWs

Although ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), is a widely accepted standard for WANs (Wide Area Networks), it has not yet been widely embraced by the NOW community, because (i) most current ATM switches (and interfaces) have high latency, and and (ii) they drop cells when (even short-term) congestion happens. In this paper, we present ATLAS I, a single-chip ATM switch with 20 Gbits/sec aggregate I...

NFS Dynamics Over Flow-Controlled Wide Area Networks

The Network File System protocol (NFS) has been the leading distributed j l e system for workstations since it was first introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1986. The geographical scale of NFS has been limited to the local area due to its relatively low petformance on the wide area Internet. However, with the advent of high bandwidth wide area networks such as ATM, NFS over WANs may become more p...
